Melissa Hartwell learned to clean the hard way: on her hands and knees, one house at a time.

She took her first cleaning job at 19, working part-time as a housekeeper in Dayton, Ohio. What started as a way to pay the bills turned into a career. Clients kept asking for her by name, mostly because she treated stubborn stains as puzzles instead of lost causes. By her late twenties she had launched her own small residential cleaning business, which she ran for eight years, handling everything from weekly maintenance cleans to the kind of move-out jobs other companies turned down.

Second, that homeowners don’t need more products, they need better judgment: knowing which stains respond to patience, which respond to chemistry, and which need a professional before DIY attempts make them permanent.

In 2019 Melissa joined Shiny Rhino’s residential team, drawn to the company’s no-games approach to pricing and scheduling, which matched how she had always run her own operation. Today, as Resident Home Care Expert, she leads the company’s home care content and supports technician training, translating two decades of field experience into advice homeowners can actually use.

Melissa tests every method she writes about in her own home before it gets published. Her test lab is a 1950s house in Columbus, Ohio with original oak floors, tile that has seen four decades of grout trouble, and carpets that live under the paws of Biscuit and Moose, her two rescue dogs. Between the dogs and two teenagers, there is rarely a shortage of fresh stains to practice on.

Her writing philosophy is simple: no miracle claims, no recycled internet myths, and no pretending a paste of baking soda fixes everything. If a stain calls for professional hot water extraction, she will tell you, and she will also tell you what to do in the first ten minutes so the pros have something left to save.

When she is not writing or testing cleaning methods, Melissa is restoring furniture she finds at estate sales, which is also how most of her upholstery experiments begin.
